The hub of Los Altos recreation is found on this six-acre site, where a whirl of classes takes place, including art,…More dance, music and cooking.</p> <p>The administrative offices of the Los Altos Recreation Department are housed here, along with the Los Altos Senior Center, Gilbert Smith House, Bus Barn Theater and the Los Altos History Museum. The site also hosts a social hall, meeting space and conference room. The private, non-profit preschool, Children's Corner, can also be found here, as can the League of Women Voters.</p> <p>The outdoor athletic facilities include a Little League baseball diamond, bocce ball court and a soccer field. Small children will enjoy the train-themed "Whistlestop" playground. These facilities and athletic fields are available for rent for weddings, sporting events or celebrations.</p> <p>As part of the larger civic center, the Hillview center is adjacent to Los Altos City Hall,  the main library, Los Altos Youth Center and the Police Department. In 2005, interested residents, the Los Altos Community Foundation and the City of Los Altos came together…More to move and re-purpose the cottage designed by renowned modern architect, Richard Neutra. </p> <p>It was the sole surviving building from "Three Small Cottages in an Orchard," designed in 1935 by the architect who was featured on the cover of Time Magazine as Man of the Year in 1949.</p> <p>The historic cottage now sits on city property between the Hillview Community Center and the Los Altos Community Foundation.  The Los Altos Neutra House now serves the community as a small conference center. The Los Altos Neutra House sponsors these programs: the biennial Modern Home Tour, the annual Architecture Speaker Series and the FILM + Conversation series.</p> <p>.</p>

The City of Los Altos Senior Center runs a variety of programs especially catering to its community's elder citizens.…More Programming includes movie screenings, birthday bingo and bimonthly luncheons. Activities include line dancing, bocce ball, ping pong, various card games, artventures, computer tutorials, a book club and day and extended trips.</p> <p>Resources available include housing services, health insurance, case management, recycling medication, eye-glasses and batteries. Programs and activities are open to the public while a select amount are exclusive to center members.</p>

The Los Altos Youth Center is part of the civic center complex on San Antonio Road. It offers numerous recreation…More programs and classes.</p> <p>It also is the site of the popular LAYC dances for Los Altos teens in 7th or 8th grades, or those attending Los Altos schools. Parent chaperones and paid city staff supervise. Membership, which provides admission to the 10 dances, is $74.  Each dance has a guest list of members who have e-mailed their plans to attend; dances are not drop-in events.</p> <p>The center is also rented out for non-youth activities, from the Rotary Club to Chamber of Commerce events. The Recreation Department, at the nearby Hillview Community Center, has rates and information.</p>

This chapter maintains a small office in the Hillview Community Center but, as a volunteer organization, does not hold office hours. Most information about its events and how to get involved or attend its board meetings, are around on its website.  The League holds its board meetings, open to the public, in the conference rooms of local institutions.</p> <p>The League of Women Voters is a national nonpartisan political organization that traces its history to the National American Women Suffrage Association. It encourages informed and active participation in government by citizens in the areas of voter education and action/advocacy.</p> <p>The League's award-winning Smart Voter website provides individualized ballot information, including polling place and candidates' statements and backgrounds.</p> <p>The League has long been known for its <a href="http://www.lwvlamv.org/Nov2010_debates.html">candidates forums</a>, which are political debates, rather than individual candidates' presentations.</p> <p>Have you ever wished that someone would explain, in plain English, what upcoming ballot propositions set out to do -- or not do?
