Bullis is a K-8, independent, public charter school that began in 2003. Its mission is to offer "a collaborative,…More experiential learning environment that emphasizes individual achievement." It achieved California Distinguished School status in 2008, and is committed to small class sizes, individualized learning through focused learning goals and hands-on projects.
The school employs a random lottery for new students when oversubscribed. Preference for 50 percent of the slots is given to those living in the attendance area of the old Bullis-Purissima school, where the charter movement began after that school was closed. Currently, Bullis has a full K-6 program, and is scheduled to enroll grade 7 in fall 2010 and grade 8 in 2011.
The school, which serves students in Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and surrounding communities, is situated on the Egan Junior High School campus. Its charter was approved by the Santa Clara County Board of Education and is not part of the Los Altos School District, nor is it one and same as Gardner Bullis School, which opened in 2008 on the site of the old Bullis-Purissima School by LASD.
