The Los Altos Educational Foundation (LAEF) raises funds to supplement the resources of the Los Altos School District. The not-for-profit organization began in 1982 during a financial crisis that followed the 1978 passage of Prop. 13 statewide. Funds raised by the educational foundation benefit the seven elementary schools and two junior high schools in the district. Its current programs are aimed at keeping hands-on science, art, music and physical education in the schools. It seeks to prevent increases in class sizes at the elementary schools, maintain library hours and maintain manageable class sizes at the junior high schools. LAEF has an endowment fund and runs an annual fund campaign aimed at priorities parents have identified. The 2009-10 year ended with 1.82 million dollars raised. Because of continuing difficulties and uncertainties in the state budget for education, the foundation has committed to a 30 percent increase for the 2010-2011 year. The office's executive director works from an office near the Los Altos School District on the Covington School campus.
