Immaculate Heart Monastery of the Poor Clares

The Poor Clares are a Catholic religious order of women who follow the ideals of Saint Clare of Assisi. These 16 cloistered nuns, part of a larger network in the Franciscan order, live a contemplative life of prayer, on behalf of individuals, the community, and the world.

Prayer is the main work of the nuns, six times a day, plus once in the middle of the night. They receive prayer requests from members of the public for many things -- illnesses, job stresses, challenges -- "anything weighing on them," said Mother Vicaress Colette in an interview. Prayer intentions, or requests can be made in person at the monastery, by phone and by letter and—a rarity nowadays—the nuns answer each one. The nuns, however, do not have e-mail, Mother Colette said.

The public can join the nuns in prayer throughout the day in the chapel. Holy Mass is said at 7am daily, and the set of daily prayers known as the Divine Office, are open to the public. A blog has been set up for the Poor Clares of Los Altos Hills at www.poorclares.wordpress.com which contains basic information, but not constantly updated information.
