Volunteer Par Excellence: Dr. Paul Auerbach

For years, LAHS has had an on-field doctor dad who implemented a football concussion study with Stanford, pitched in to get wrestling mats, and has put his skills to work in disaster areas spanning Haiti to Nepal.

Editor's Note: The 29th Annual Joint Community Service Volunteer Awards gave public and lavish recognition for nine individuals who were chosen from scores of nominations. The strong ethos of volunteerism in Los Altos and Los Altos Hills is what many credit as the thing that makes the communities so strong.

isn't adequate for nine people who have quietly made big contributions over years. So, for the past few weeks, we've been reprinting the text from the introductions made for each individual at the Dec. 2, 2011 awards event. This is the final installment.

Los Altos High School Athletic Director Kim Cave introduced Paul Auerbach this way:

Dr. Paul Auerbach has been associated with Los Altos High School (LAHS) since his oldest son Brian matriculated in 2000.

He is constantly working to make LAHS, the community and beyond, a better place. Paul loves working with kids. His own kids have provided him with many opportunities to get involved, including athletics, drama productions, vocal and instrumental music.

Paul has worked as our football team physician for the past 12 years and also supported our wrestling team. He began coaching the 7th and 8th grade wrestlers at Egan and created a recruitment program to encourage continuity into the wrestling program at LAHS.

He has worked as:

- Team physician (on-field doctor for all football games, J.V. and Varsity)

- Implemented the football concussion study working with Stanford (past two years)

- Volunteer assistant wrestling coach (he still works out with the kids)

- Procured new wrestling mats

- Speaker at our STEM Week (Science Technology Engineering and Math)

- Staff training for medically at-risk students and AED device use

Community is extremely important to Paul. Beside his work at LA high school he has volunteered his time as a Little League Baseball coach and commissioner.

His work with the Stanford Emergency Room has helped us when students are in need of medical attention and support, but he has also used his medical expertise to help set up ER rooms in disaster areas such as Haiti, Nepal and Guatemala.

He is the author of multiple publications and a world-renowned physician in the area of Wilderness Medicine.

We feel extremely lucky to have Dr. Paul Auerbach as part of our LAHS family.
