First Fridays Goes Monthly—This Week!

Encouraged by crowds bustling through their shops, merchants urged Los Altos Forward to hold First Fridays every month, not every other month, to see if they can build momentum. P.S. There will be sweets!

First Friday, that downtown moving party that encourages locals to roam from shop to shop in search stickers, treats and—yes—purchases, is going monthly.

Every other month since December, Los Altos Forward has organized themed Friday night activities around downtown, from to a May Flowers treasure hunt through participating stores.

Now merchants have convinced them it needs to be every month. So beginning this Friday, and through the end of the year it will truly be First Fridays, each and every month.

"We believe that it will be even more successful if we do it regularly so the community could count on it," said Joe Eyre, who is responsible for organizing the themed events.

Those first, First Friday nights have set the streets of downtown abuzz with activity. Musicians performed from the front of shops and restaurants. Non-profit groups set up tables. Children's activities were available. And people thronged the stores.

Los Altos Forward, a group that has been working to inject greater vitality into the downtown scene, had put a lot of work into themes every other month. Now, merchants will organize the "other" Fridays, without the themes, but with activities in stores and sweets. Los Altos Forward will continue to coordinate, promote, and provide music. On the "other" Fridays, Los Altos Forward will also organize a themed activity, Eyre said.

Eyre credits Nature Gallery owner Carol Garston with pushing for First Fridays to go every month.

"Carol is really 'all in' for Los Altos and she has a number of ideas for improving business for all of downtown, not just her store only," Eyre said.

"This is a trial, but we think if we get enough momentum, we are confident that the First Friday will be a self-perpetuating, fun and community-building evening for residents of our city and surrounding cities and one that will also become profitable for the merchants."

Over 20 downtown Los Altos stores and galleries will be open until 8pm the evening of June 1 st.

Many of them will be hosting complimentary sweets and several will offer interesting events in their stores. Some of these in-store events include:

  • Apricot Lane will be provide a “Complimentary Color and Style Consultation featuring their Fresh Picked Stella & Dot Summer Jewelry Collection,” said Naida Ergas, Marketing Project Manager for the store.
  • The “Passport to Adventure” summer reading and travel program will be introduced by LindenTree book store that evening.
  • From 6-8pm, Nature Gallery will be hosting Kai Chope, gem & flower teacher. Kai will present her Cocreatis Collection of Gem and flower essences & essential oils, Garston said, and will explain how these products can enhance Chi energy.Nature Gallery specializes in minerals, fossils and jewelry since 1987.

The only problem with the charter school is that they cause more problem than they solve. TheyRead More want to close Covington, then Blach. So, they don't provide flexibility at all. They keep going to court. This is a case were the remedy is worst than the disease. The original idea is that we have to be creative with the 10th site. Land is scarce, and most likely, we cannot provide the same facility than other school within the district. People are not happy about being moved from their school (with good reason I feel) Solution: provide an inspiring project. May be an immersion program, or a more academic program, or maybe a program to help english learner from K-3. If we don't innovate with a more flexible program, we might just need to redraw the boundaries every 5-7 years. Nobody can foresee the future, but you can build flexibility.

Maybe offering a magnet school could help with stability? It can balance out enrollment at otherRead More schools so that attendance boundaries do not have to be redrawn. Isn't the charter school doing that for the LASD district right now?

I saw you had a good discussion on the definition of a neighborhood school. But beyond theRead More definitions, I would like to ask why does palo Alto school District and Cupertino School district have a mix of neighborhood school and some choice school. Those are two high performing district right next to us. Can a choice school be an excellent way to stop the highly disruptive attendance boundary change ? People say I am for statu quo, that I am against change. I feel that family and children need stability, that is why we don't change spouse at the pace the BoT change the attendance boundary. People who want some stability at home (and their school) do make a reasonable request.

Try out some alternative transportation, like bicycling or walking (or even carpooling with other families) with your kids to school, bike to the grocery store for those one or two items or walk to the local coffee shop instead of driving. Take the train on a weekend adventure to San Francisco or light rail to San Jose. It's a good opportunity to try something you might not have done before. Have fun with it!
