SOFTBALL: Los Altos Blanked in El Camino Opener

Eagles leave eight runners on base in road defeat at Milpitas.

Milpitas 1, Los Altos 0

The Star: Los Altos High softball starting pitcher Aly Goldberg pitched six strong innings, only yielding one earned run in a 1-0 loss at Milpitas High Monday afternoon. Under some gloomy conditions, including on-and-off light rainfall, Goldberg only gave up one hit and struck out three batters during the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division opener for both schools.

The Turning Points: With Milpitas (3-5, 1-0 SCVAL El Camino) ahead 1-0 going into the late innings, Los Altos starting pitcher and team captain Aly Goldberg pounded a lead-off triple to the wall in right field to kick off the top of the sixth. Showing poise beyond her years, Milpitas freshman reliever Marie Mosqueda snatched up a comebacker to record the first out, then induced back-to-back groundballs to quell the late Eagles rally.

Los Altos (3-2, 0-1 SCVAL El Camino) threatened again in the final inning, putting two runners on with only one out. However, there would be no late game heroics from the visitors on this day.

A fielder’s choice and a pop out wrapped up the 1-0 victory for the Trojans. Goldberg hit the Milpitas lead-off hitter with a pitch to open the second inning. Two batters later, the lone Trojans hit of the day proved to be costly. The RBI single into left scored one run to put Milpitas ahead 1-0 after two. They would eventually win by the same score.

The Quotes: “It was a very different game today than the ones we’ve been playing,” Los Altos senior Kelsey Ayers said after the El Camino defeat. “We’ve been playing teams in the upper leagues. I think we didn’t come through with the hits and the adjustments we needed to make to win the game.”

The switch from a right-hander to a lefty also forced the Eagles adjust midway the contest.

“I think we saw how much slower the second pitcher was but wasn’t able to take advantage of it,” Los Altos senior Jenny Leonard said.

What's Next? Los Altos will host Gunn High-Palo Alto at 3:30 on Wednesday afternoon.

Bottom Line: Los Altos left eight runners stranded in the loss, including three in the final two innings of play. The timely hits didn’t come, extending the Eagles scoreless innings streak to stretch into double digits. Los Altos was blanked 10-0 by St. Francis High-Mountain View last week. The Eagles defeated Mt. View High earlier in the week, 9-4.
