Sail On! Winter Racing Added at Shoreline Lake

The new club is aimed at competitive sailors, ages 14 and up.

Due to Silicon Valley's love of year-round sailing, the Aquatic Center at Mountain View's Shoreline Lake is adding a new Winter Racing Club beginning Dec. 22.

The program is geared to competitive sailors, ages 14 and up, to engage in officiated, one-design, Winter fleet racing in the South Bay.

With growing demand for new sailing activities, coupled with the racing scene heating up over the last few years, this club is an extension of Shoreline's recently introduced Adult Racing Clinics and the Advanced Kid/Teen Sailing Camp.

Organizers note that local small craft sailors no longer need to haul boats northward, or try to find crew on their own.

Running through March 16, the Winter Racing Club, is open to sailors with experience racing boats 16 feet and under, and will meet Sundays from 2 p.m to 4 p.m. and race in Catalina Capri 14.2's.

Although organized as individual sessions, to ensure six races take place per day, each participant must sign up for at least four sessions.

The sessions will include a skippers' meeting before the races begin, a debrief/protest hearing after races have finished, and coaching in between.

Winners will take home a trophy and a $50 Shoreline gift card, and the team name will be added to a plaque displayed at the Aquatic Center.

The winning team will be determined by a combined score at the end of the March races -- with those eligible to win participating in a minimum of eight sessions.
