No LAHS Eagle Football This Week

Too many banged up and ill players depleted the bench of the Los Altos varsity football team, and there were concerns that they could not play safely this week.

Officials have cancelled the Los school High School's football game Saturday against San Benito, the Mercury News and the Town Crier reported.

The Eagles, who started with 34 players, had only 18 available players Monday, athletic director Kim Cave told the news media Wednesday.

"Safety was a huge issue for the kids," Cave told reporters. The Mercury quoted coach Rudy Alcala's disappointment in having to forfeit—the first time in his seven years with the Eagles. "This is hard to swallow," Alcala was quoted as saying.

Los Altos, with a 0-3 record, will be able to play when the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League division opener takes place Oct. 5 against Cupertino.

The Town Crier observed that the Eagles were banged up when they faced off against Mountain View last week, then lost more players in the lopsided defeat.
