Whiz Kid: Yasmeen Serhan

Patch's 'Whiz Kid' of the week was nominated by the Los Altos Community Foundation for outstanding service to a high school peer-support programs for teens.

Whiz Kid’s Name: Yasmeen Serhan

Whiz Kid’s School and Grade: Junior,

Whiz Kid’s Accomplishments: Yasmeen was nominated by the staff of the because of her outstanding contributions to its program entitled “E-Cubed,” or “E3,” a local youth philanthropy program. Yasmeen helps run E3’s program called “Teen Talk,” which pairs local teens up with peers from the program to give them a friendly face to talk to about any personal issues that may be weighing on their mind, that they may not feel comfortable talking to an adult about. Yasmeen helped bring Teen Talk to the Los Altos High campus, where it has been doing a lot of good. Yasmeen also serves as the secretary of the Associated Student Body, and is involved in Mock Trial, for which she will serve as president next year. She also serves on the junior class council and is involved in a handful of other campus clubs. Academically, she maintains a 3.8 GPA currently, and takes a rigorous schedule of classes including three Advanced Placement courses—French IV, U.S. History and English.

Yasmeen is currently exploring many different colleges to determine which she wants to apply to in the fall. She plans to go to law school, and is considering a career in international or humanitarian law.

Whiz Kid’s Key to Success: Yasmeen said, “I think it's kind of a combination of things— we're told constantly that you have to do this to get into college, and you have to do that for your future. But, you also want to be well-rounded and grounded, so that's how my family is so important to me—my family constantly supports me. Plus, the activities I'm in look good on a college resume, yes, but they're also what I like to do, so personal passion is important, I think.”
