What To Expect At Tonight's School Board Meeting

Los Altos board to discuss update on finances, teacher negotiations, a property tax proposal and more at 7 p.m. meeting.

Finances, a property tax law that affects homeowners over age 55, and teacher union negotiations are in focus at Monday night's Los Altos School District Board of Trustees meeting, at 7 p.m. in the Board Room at 201 Covington Rd., Los Altos.

District officials are breathing a little easier since the Measure E parcel tax passed last month, and revised state budget projections are not as dire as previously predicted, but the district's budget still faces hurdles, according to Randall Kenyon, assistant superintendent of business services.

“Now we’re looking at trying to solve a multi-year problem,” Kenyon said, adding that the 2011-12  school year deficit is now down to $1.3 million, without factoring in concessions from employees or contributions of the Los Altos Educational Foundation. Kenyon will give an update and recap of the financial situation Monday night, he said.

The board will also decide whether to support the Santa Clara County Assessor’s recommendation to eliminate Proposition 90 in the county. The proposition allows people over the age of 55 to move to another house of equal or lesser value within the county and continue to pay the same amount of property taxes as when the original house was first purchased.

Elimination of Proposition 90 would mean a bump in property taxes flowing into county coffers, which would in turn increase money for local schools.

The board will be in a closed session to discuss teacher union negotiations, student disciplinary action and possible litigation. Any decision or update to these issues will be reported to the public at the start of the regular meeting.
