What to Expect At Monday Night's School Board Meeting

School board discusses priorities while state budget is still uncertain, accepting special election results and joint discussions with city over proposals to televise board meetings and allow city maintenance of athletic fields.

The Los Altos School Board meets on Monday at 7 p.m., where it will consider accepting the results of the recent Measure E parcel tax vote, and discuss API scores with similar schools and continue discussions about its priorities while state funding is still uncertain.

Measure E, which passed with 67.06 percent of the vote, was certified more than a week ago by the county registrar of voters. As a tax measure, it needed two-thirds-plus-one votes to pass. The vote was 9,187 to 4,512, meaning the tax passed by a slim, 54-vote margin. The board had been waiting to see if the opposition to the $193 parcel tax would request a recount at its own expense. Ron Haley, who had led the "No" campaign, said Monday that the group had decided not to ask for a recount and wanted to work with the district on the issues it considers important.

The board will also hear a report on the joint school-city subcommittee meeting held last week. Among the several issues, including severe parking and traffic problems during school dismissal time at Blach and Bullis Charter schools, were two that the city and the school district will continue to develop.

One includes the possible televising of school board meetings, through community access funds available to the city. The second is an offer from the city to maintain the school district athletic fields. That would also include scheduling the use of the athletic fields, which are used by different non-school athletic teams.
