ViewFinder: Crossing Almond Ave at Los Altos High School
An accident on Almond Avenue prompts the City Council to add a crossing guard.
Pick a school, any school in Los Altos. And then look outside on mornings just before the bell rings. The teeming streets of huge cars and kids on bikes and foot, can set your teeth on edge.
After a Los Altos High School student was struck by a car a couple of weeks ago, the assigned a crossing guard to the corner of Almond Avenue and North Gordon Way.
The intersection of Almond Avenue and N. Gordon Way is the busiest. There a stop sign on Gordon Way, but not on Almond Avenue, so cars merging from Gordon to Almond often wait until students cross, stopping traffic on Almond.

Mark Laranjo, LAHS's school resource officer, was assigned to control traffic between 7:50 a.m. to 8:10 a.m. On Tuesday, the council ordered designs for a flashing crosswalk and raised roadbed even though the city had previously had no plans in its budget to install it.
In the coming weeks, Los Altos Patch will be visiting intersections and roadways that the city has previously identified as needing attention because of traffic issues.
