Four Schools Knocked Off Internet By Car Crash

Four schools in the Cupertino Union School District were without Internet service Monday following a weekend accident in which a car hit a utility pole that knocked out power to 6,500 homes—and apparently, a fiber optic line as well.

Montclaire, West Valley, Stevens Creek elementary schools, and Cupertino Middle School were all rendered without Internet service.

The early morning Sunday morning collision on Homestead Road near Wright Avenue had power was restored before 10 a.m. the same day. The pole also carried fiber optic line as well.

Jeremy Nishihara, a spokesman for the CUSD, said service was expected to be back up Tuesday.

Parents received notice—via email from district headquarters that their schools would temporarily be offline—that the school was without Internet access Monday, following weekend repair work that disrupted the fiber optic cable serving the school. If parents wanted to get in contact, it would have to be the old fashioned way: phone.

Many received notices like the following.

Dear Montclaire Parents:

The school currently does not have internet access as a result of the power outage caused by an accident on Homestead Road this weekend. While power was restored yesterday, the fiber optic cables were cut and have to be reconnected. We do not currently have an estimated time for internet service to resume.

In the meantime our phones are operational and classes are proceeding as normal.
