Los Altos in Top 500 High Schools in U.S.

The popular news magazine U.S. and World Reports released its list of best secondary public schools in the country.

Out of 21,776 public high schools in the country, has ranked No. 404 in the 2012 national rankings released by U.S. News and World Report.

This earned the Eagles a gold medal and puts them in the top 2 percent of high schools nationwide.

According to the magazine, the three-step methodology considered how students compared to the state average, then how the least advantage students fared in that school compared to other schools, and then finally, they factored in college readiness—how students do with advance placement or the International Baccalaureate programs at their schools.

Under this methodology and did not rank, however AVHS received a bronze medal. Nearly half of high school students from Mountain View attend Los Altos High. And about half of Los Altos students attend Mountain View High. 

Part of the , Los Altos High ranked No. 75 in California. It has 1,663 enrollment for student to teacher ratio of 20 to 1.

Gunn High School ranked No. 112 in the country and 17th in California.  the alma mater of Apple co-founders Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs, which students in south Los Altos usually attend, did not rank.
