Assistant Superintendent Alyssa Gallagher is recommending the use of two online programs on an independent study basis for Los Altos School District students who wish to take geometry.

The district has been discussing the addition of geometry, which a group of  district parents have been pushing for as the district evaluates its math curriculum and aligns it with the state's new common core standards.

The plan to include math is scheduled to go into effect for the 2014-15 school year, leaving out students attending school in 2013-14. At the request of Trustee Steve Taglio, Gallagher looked into non-traditional delivery models to teach geometry as an option.

Additionally, Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District will offer a summer geometry course to assist LASD make the transition.

Gallagher recommended the following options that could be done as independent study, as is already available to students:
There are two online programs that are recognized by MVLA High School District andmeet the AG Requirements for Geometry. These two programs are National University Virtual High School and BYU Independent Study Online Courses. Both of the programsare completely independent. MindLaunch is a third option that that builds on the BYUIndependent Study Online Course, but adds over 25 hours of instruction, guidance and support from an experienced teacher.
