Bullis, School District, Consider Other School Sites?

With time ticking on the 2012-13 school year, it appears that both Bullis Charter School and the Los Altos School District may be willing to keep negotiating the future—including identifying other sites—while settling arrangements for the near term.

Proposed terms from mediation sessions were released late Friday afternoon that  appear to try to provide breathing room while allowing plans to go forward for the start of school in August. Both boards are scheduled to meet to discuss, and possibly vote on the terms Monday.

“It gives perhaps a little more space at Egan than Egan parents want to give up, but it’s still around 40 percent of the campus,“ said board president Mark Goines Friday evening. BCS board chairman Ken Moore was not available for comment at this publication time. 

without discussion or input from the BCS board, these terms were discussed in the past week's mediation session and then posted on the LASD website Friday, Goines said. It is unclear whether the BCS negotiators had any input in this proposal.

Both boards still need to discuss and deliberate on the content of any proposal before any action can be taken. 

Importantly, allows for the identification of other school sites for BCS and does not limit it to the four sites that were in the tentative framework. . 

Proposed terms call for:

• Bullis Charter School (BCS) to be housed on the Egan Jr. High School campus for 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years.
• Both parties “will continue to work on a longterm deal including identification of sites and timeline.”
• Bullis agrees to “waive litigation arising out of its use and occupation of Egan during 12-13 and 13-14” school years.
• Bullis agrees to close litigation on the 2009-10 year, including legal fees.

In addition, the terms call would add the following space to BCS at Egan:

• Two additional classrooms, 960 square feet, for K-6
• One additional classroom, 960 square feet, for Grades 7-8
• Additional classroom to be located in the place proposed on an earlier, May 16 draft facilities agreement
• An additional 1,440-square feet building for use as a middle school science room
• An additional 1,920-square-foot music room
• An additional 480-square-foot building for small group space
• BCS has the right to convert any of its facilities to a technology room, at its own expense.
• An additional 960-square-foot classroom for 2013-14

Egan and BCS would agree to share:

• Foods room for three weeks for 6-8 grade students
• Woodworking room for two weeks for 6-8 grade students
• PE Areas for 6-8 grade students including tennis courts; gym or multipurpose room area;  track and shot put area
• Softball field
• Patch Soccer Field
