Bullis Charter School Votes to Grow 15 Percent

BCS voted 7-0 to add a Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades as an initial step.

The Bullis Charter School Board voted 7 to 0 Monday night to add a Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades for the 2012-13 school year, an addition that will be included in its Nov. 1 facilities request to the Los Altos School District.

In its directed its facilities committee to draft a larger plan to add another 6th through 8th grades, plus two more kindergartens for 2013-14 classes. The committee decided on a more modest scale.

"Based on conversations that we had, simply adding K, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades will meet the demands of the community that continues to be on wait list and want to have same education," Medlin said.

It would add 15 percent, or 70 to 80 more students, she said.

BCS School Principal Wanny Hersey said the added classes would allow her to continue working on the things BCS was already doing, and "doing it at the speed that will keep the quality of the programs.

"If it's a good model it will allow us to do more things and keep the programs," she said.

Board committee member Andrea Eyring added that the smaller step "will allow us to see how this is working, and then we can consider adding another kindergarten the following year." There could be four Kindergartens in 2014-15.
