What To Expect At Tuesday Night's City Council Meeting

Downtown parking plaza development, historic home designation debate, wireless antennas on utility poles and a memorial tree for Environmental Commissioner Patty Rosewater.

Let the debating begin. The Los Altos City Council will hear plenty Tuesday night from residents on at least three potentially contentious subjects: downtown parking, historic home designation and wireless antennas on utility poles.

The night's activities begin with a study session about the Downtown Opportunity Study at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at 1 N. San Antonio Rd.

The study looks at how best to develop downtown parking plazas to attract more shoppers to the district. The public is invited to share opinions about the study's findings.

After a closed session concerning the search for , the council convenes its regular meeting at 7 p.m.

The council is being asked to weigh in on the historic designations of several homes. Six homeowners are protesting the designations by the Historical Commission, fearing that their property values will be negatively affected.

Another possibly contentious subject is approving encroachment permits for wireless antennas. Translation: Cellphone antennas could start showing up on utility poles in neighborhoods in the future. The California Public Utilities Commission has ruled cities cannot deny right-of-way to wireless companies seeking to attach antennas to the poles, according to a staff report.

A less contentious subject on the agenda is allowing for a donated memorial tree to honor Environmental Commission Chairwoman Patty Rosewater, who died Sept. 4.
