What to Expect at Monday Night's School Board Meeting

The Los Altos School District board discusses terms for non-binding talks with Bullis Charter School, considers polling support for a possible bond measure, and receives an updated report by the district's demographer.

 

The Los Altos School board meets Monday night, and Bullis Charter School matters appear on a full agenda.

March is an important month, with the annual facilities request from the charter school actively being negotiated, the Superior Court's review of the district's compliance with Prop. 39-mandated facilities provision, and an attempt for the district and the charter school . are also hoped to be scheduled this month, once the two bodies agree on the mediators, LASD president Mark Goines said.

After hearing from the PTA about its 2011-12 goals, trustees will receive an update on the demographer's forecast for student enrollment.

The iterim 2011-12 financial report will be voted upon. Then the 2012-13 budget will be discussed, including PTA and LAEF funding. Trustees are  asked to give direction to the Budget Review Committee and make a recommendation regarding potential certificated staff layoffs, a near-annual rite for the years of shrinking state budget support.

The board will next discuss and vote on terms for with Bullis Charter School's board "on issues of mutual interest." Trustee Doug Smith had sought such talks with the BCS board earlier, but details took a bit longer to nail down and is finally ready for consideration.

LASD Superintendent Jeffrey Baier will then propose engaging consultant TBWB  Strategies to assist "in accurately gauging community support for a potential bond measure." Some of the discussion of finding a longterm home for BCS has been to build new facilities, for which a bond would be needed.

Trustees are also asked to think of items for the City/Schools upcoming subcommittee meeting.
