From the City of Los Altos regarding State Street Green:

The State Street Green has returned through Friday, June 13!

As part of the construction agreement between Safeway and the City of Los Altos, Safeway contractors are responsible for updating the intersection and crosswalks at the corner of First and State Streets to match the recently completed downtown Streetscape improvements.

The construction in this area calls for the closure of First Street between the Central Parking Plaza (behind Peet's Coffee) and the North Parking Plaza (behind Balisimo Salon) as well as the block of State Street between First and Second Streets for a period of three weeks.

The City has been working with downtown merchants to coordinate activities to help drive interest and foot traffic in the area during the street closure.

It was decided that bringing back the State Street Green would help draw community members downtown during construction.

The State Street Green will be open for public use during the 3-week closure, with just a few activities currently planned.

Shopping on the Green
Saturday, May 31
11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

In coordination with the Los Altos Village Association, downtown shops will be setting up outdoor displays of their merchandise on Saturday, May 31.

Some may remember the Sidewalk Sales in years past – this will be a great opportunity for shoppers to stroll the downtown shops and hopefully take advantage of the unique outdoor space provided by the State Street Green.

Concert on the Green
Friday, June 6
6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Gather with friends and family and head to downtown Los Altos for a FREE concert by the Houserockers on the State Street Green!

The Houserockers are a 10-piece Rock & Soul band from Los Gatos.

With a wailing 5 piece horn section and rock solid rhythm section of 2 guitars, bass, drums and keys, the band brings the timeless classics to life.

Be sure to stick around after the show and stroll downtown shops participating in First Friday's enter-to-win prize giveaway and enjoy more bands playing downtown until 9 p.m.

This concert is co-sponsored by Passerelle Investment Company and the City of Los Altos.

The Green Concept is outstanding but Los Altos could have / should have done more. The two monster buildings on First Street (adjacent to State) should never have been approved. Instead a skateboard / children's playground park with underground parking should have been built. The massive apartment / condo buildings could have been shelved, too. Combine the underground parking with permanent "pedestrian only" sections of State Street and Los Altos would set the standards for other communities to follow. Now we get permanent building shadows (a sunless environment) on State Street and (unneeded) massive grocery stores in our small community. Who came up with this idea anyway?

Great, as if parking isn't bad enough? More stuff for the kids of Los Altos and be damn the elders who built the town! How about finding more parking for our seniors? What a novel idea, care for them too :-) No I am not a senior I just care about them!

I am a senior and I like to have areas that everyone can enjoy - parks - even skateboard parks (best avoided by seniors but usually adjacent to park areas frequented by seniors, children and their families). Parking can be tough in Los Altos but adding large office buildings, (extra) large grocery stores and a lot of new condominiums and apartment buildings is NOT going to help the parking scenario . . . unless we all got rid of our cars (!)

Parking is a chicken and egg problem. With the new homes and businesses downtown we're getting much more vibrancy, and new parking will follow, hopefully by building a real parking garage with first-floor retail to replace one of the plazas. I'd rather look a bit longer for parking with a real choice of destinations than have plenty of parking in a town center filled with mostly salons and boutiques which close at 5PM.
