Spare the Air Day Sunday

Before going for a run or embarking on a long hike, read this warning.

Sunday has been declared a Spare the Air day due to rising inland temperatures, low winds and automobile emissions, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District said Saturday.

This is the fifth time this summer that the agency has issued a Spare the Air alert, which warns of unhealthy levels of ozone.

Ozone is formed when sunlight interacts with motor vehicle exhaust and gasoline vapors, air district officials said. It can cause throat irritation, congestion and chest pain, trigger asthma, inflame the linings of the lung and worsen bronchitis and emphysema.

Residents are advised to avoid driving and limit outdoor exercise to the early morning hours when ozone levels are lowest.
