San Mateo County Seeks Input on Lower Alpine Trail

County may lose $10.2 million from Stanford if agreement about trail improvements is not reached.

What should be done to the Lower Alpine Trail in unincorporated Menlo Park? San Mateo County staff will have a meeting Tuesday night in Portola Valley to take public input.

If a plan is not agreed on by the end of this year, money for funding improvements on the trail will be redirected to Santa Clara County, according to co.sanmateo.ca.us. This would be the third and final time that an agreement about the trail could not be reached.

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors has twice declined to accept $10.2 million from Stanford University to move and augment the trail, once in 2008 and again in 2010. A decision about placement and trail features could not be reached.

County staff invites information from the public Tuesday about things that need to be fixed, as well as more conceptual improvements.

A plan for the trail was handed to the County's Parks and Recreation director in November 2005. The trail runs along Alpine Road from Menlo Park to Portola Valley.

Tuesday's meeting will include a walking tour and a display of maps that show the trail in various stages of conceptual development that could be implemented.

The meeting will be from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Ladera Oaks Swim and Tennis Club at 3249 Alpine Rd. in Portola Valley.
