PHOTOS: Los Altos Welcomes Marcia Somers

With four days under her belt, the new city manager was feted at a reception at the Garden House in Shoup Park.

Mayor Val Carpenter said she was sold on the Somers since in December, when the prospective job candidate took the time to come to a City Council retreat from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Few people come to watch the council members thrash out their goals for the year, including the 60 applicants for the city manager job. The only one was Somers.

"I was gobsmacked," Carpenter said. Not only that, she came to City Council meetings to further see how the members interacted, and to see what she might be getting into.

"She has the perfect style for Los Altos," Carpenter said.

With Day Four under her belt, Somers said she's found her reception warm. "I'm so thrilled, the community has been so supportive of me coming to Los Altos."

She said she's been impressed by the level of volunteerism. "People really care about this community, and that's why I'm in public service."
