There is a national consensus that community colleges are more important than ever inthis economy - to give access to four-year colleges which have become too expensive formany middle class families - and to provide training for middle skills jobs – the gatewaysto the middle class.
Foothill and DeAnza Colleges are both nationally known as excellent schools. Together they have one of the highest transfer rates in the state to the University of California and to California State universities.
We are also well known for offering high quality career training programs.And we work hard to direct training to jobs that the Silicon Valley economy needs –good, middle skills jobs that are stable and well paid. Jobs like Computer Technician, Dental Hygienist, Paramedic, and Auto Mechanic.
In spite of 15% state budget cuts in 3 years, we have prioritized and right-sized tomaintain high quality teaching and learning and we are helping students succeed inwhatever field they choose to pursue.
During accreditations last year at both colleges the accreditors singled out the Board ofTrustees for having a “Clear understanding of our role as trustees, for a clear Philosophyand Mission Statement, and for our commitment to student-centered leadership anddecision-making.”
I am very proud of that. Leadership makes a difference. For these institutions to remaingreat we need to keep in place the leaders and the programs that have gotten us here.
