Gunn High Student Wins 2013 Congressional Art Competition

Elaine Lu's piece "Two Children" will be on display in the halls of Congress for the next year.

 

A few members of congress will soon be able to admire the artwork of an inspiring Gunn High School student.

After a competitive nomination process,, Rep. Anna G. Eshoo (D-Palo Alto) announced on Saturday, Apr. 20 that Gunn High School 10th grader Elaine Lu has won the 18th Congressional District's 2013 Congressional Art Competition. For her reward, Lu's piece "Two Children" will be on exhibit in the halls of the Congress.

"Bravo to Elaine Lu on winning the Congressional Art Competition in California’s 18th District!" Eshoo said. "Her artwork showcases great artistic talent and potential. Elaine’s work will be honored in Congress and represent our district in Congress."

In addition, Lu will receive two round-trip airline tickets to Washington, D.C. to attend a reception with winning artists from other congressional districts and the unveiling of their works in the Capitol.

According to a press statement, Eshoo's office received a record total of 72 pieces of art from 44 artists in 16 high schools throughout the district.

Runners up for the competition Tommy Meaney of Sacred Heart School with his piece "Looking Forward" and Max Austin of Linden Tree Academy with his piece "The Way I See" placed in second and third place respectively.

Patron of the arts Jill Freidenrich, local photographer and poet Leonore Horowitz, local gallery owner Mahmut Keskekci and Palo Alto Art Center Director Karen Kienzle, served as the four judges.

Other district high schoolers with honorable mentions include:

  • Victoria Kyone, Palo Alto High, "Hear Our Prayer"
  • Jocelyn Moreno, Leigh High, "Untold Story"
  • Kaylen Chung, Woodside Priory, "City Reflection"
  • Leah Thomas, Woodside Priory, "The Judges’ Eyes"
  • Saloni Kalkat, Castilleja, "Nostalgia"
  • Cindy Zhu, Gunn High School, "The Dreams of Tomorrow"
