"Dear Mr. Boehner," 4th Grader Wants Action

A Bay Area 4th grader asks the House Speaker to reopen the government. She concludes her letter with this, "...Also, why don't you want people to have healthcare?"

First Yosemite, the Statue of Liberty, and the panda-cam at the National Zoo---now, Ocean Beach in San Francisco has taken the blow of the government shutdown, and in its wake has swept away the sandcastle dreams of a group of fourth graders from Central Elementary School in Belmont.

On Tuesday, the students in George Metropulos’ fourth grade class learned that the annual Ocean Beach sandcastle building project that attracts about 30 schools from around the Bay Area, has been canceled.  Ocean Beach is located in the federally funded Golden Gate National Recreational Area.

“Our event was scheduled for this Saturday, Oct. 13, however we were notified by the school Tuesday, that the event has been canceled/postponed. The beach falls under federal jurisdiction and because of the government shutdown, permits have been revoked and everything's been canceled,” said Roma Mah, mother of fourth grader, Kaliya.

Mah explained that each year, a team of local architects comes to the school weeks before the event to work with the kids brainstorming and building model templates and ultimately designing the sandcastle they would build on Ocean Beach.

“The kids, parents, and fourth grade teachers spend all day at the beach building the castle, they're giving a lunch and they are given a special t-shirt to commemorate the day.  It's definitely a huge event for our kids,” said Mah.

“They are hoping to reschedule, but it is such a huge event, it's easier said than done.”

Never one to miss a teachable moment, Metropulos redirected his students’ disappointment into a civics lesson and encouraged them to write letters to Congress expressing their disappointment.

One student scripted a letter to House Speaker John Boehner:

Dear Mr. Boehner,

Please reopen the government so Mr. Metropulos’ fourth grade class can go to Ocean Beach for the Sandcastle Classic.  Ocean Beach is in San Francisco.   Also, why don't you want people to have healthcare?

Kate, Age 9

And Roma Mah’s daughter Kaliya remains hopeful that the sandcastle project will be rescheduled.

“I was looking forward to it because it looked like it was going to be cool.  I’m sad because it was canceled.  I hope the beach is going to reopen soon so we get to do it.  I do get to sleep in though now,” said Kaliya.

To quote Bill Cody in the latest Time magazine: "The Republicans don't want negotiation. They want capitulation. Completely different." They truly lack the maturity of 4th graders!
Rick October 12, 2013 at 05:06 PM
Joan we can quote many people. As far as obama why didn't he sign his family up for the health care he wants every other person to ?? Please read agenda 21, then tell me some more quotes.

Which "bay area"??
Rick October 12, 2013 at 05:24 PM
Jerry you are right teaching a child the truth is a parents job. In your school district look up common core

"They want capitulation." -- Joan --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You have it assbackwards Joan. It's the left who desires complete obedience. Its always the right that has to compromise with this administration, always. Think back regarding the previous budget battles and it was the left who always blamed the right for not comprising when in fact it was the left who drew the line and then refused to budge, same as today.

Cheryl, you need to stop watching PMSNBC and pull your head out. Your Messiah hasn't done anything except put us another 12 Trillion in debt and taken over 1/6th of the nation's faltering economy with another enormous tax.. What has changed in 5+years that wouldn't have changed all by itself? A country more divided than ever and more than 350 million still out of work? The only thing folks like yourself can do is simply throw out the card and divide us even further. Wake up and do your homework about what's really going on with this crippled nation and stop listening to the parrots at MSM.

She should have sent it to Harry Reid and obama. They voted NO to CR funding government.
Revealer Reality October 12, 2013 at 08:19 PM
Teaching what? Crap is all he seems to be engaged in with coercing a child to do any such thing. Math, english, reading is critical to education not all these other biased subjects that can be learned when older and able to understand the basics by reading and understanding and evaluating reality verses fictional accounts.

Happily there are those of us who don't need to sound manly or macho by using terms like "pull your head out" and "ass backwards" to try an make a point. Responses that disagree with mine do not surprise me at all in this smug, affluent "village" as some term it, and I remain thankful that there are also intelligent folks here who use their intellects frequently and rationally. Even watching Fox as I'm sure you do, you must have noted that the leading polls are showing that the Republicans are being blamed for this heinous situation by the public, far more than the President or the Democrats. Compromise is valid for discussion AFTER the government is again open and functioning FOR ALL OUR CITIZENS. Perhaps a re-reading of the Constitution would be helpful. Copies are readily available. Enjoy your weekend and this wonderful Autumn weather and Farwell!

A heartwarming story of parents brainwashing their kid, using the kid for a public stunt, and giving them a very biased and incomplete picture of current events. Of course, the media gets it out there without questioning it.

"Compromise is valid for discussion AFTER the government is again open and functioning FOR ALL OUR CITIZENS." -- Joan --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So, the left will talk AFTER it gets everything it wants? How is that compromising anything Joan? You folks are a piece of work Joan, a real piece of work.

People who always have their hands out will always look for more. Where i live some people say "if its free its for me". Is this what we want for our children ?? I still haven't heard anyone comment on agenda 21 or even common core ! Thats when the conversation will become really interesting. I wait for the fun to begin ! With the information that I have read there are only 3 states that will not participate in these programs. Please look it up. Then lets talk .
Jessica October 13, 2013 at 09:23 AM
This kid should be asking why did Obama lie, he said he would not raise the deficit, but has done so on record levels. Why does Obama want everyone to be part time employees? Why does Obama intentionally make the government slim down "hurt" including closing the Amber website while his wifes website keeps on wasting money? Why did he spend tax payer money on his fancy vacations while middle america is struggling? Why did he golf when attacks were occuring? Why does he hate American troops? Why does he cater to illegal immigrants and hide his Criminal Attorney General Eric Holder who should be in Jail for fast and furious?
Jessica October 13, 2013 at 09:24 AM
Joan Mather have you seen Obamas poll numbers? Record lows!
DONNY3666 October 13, 2013 at 09:58 AM
This is disgusting. I hope the teacher explained to them that they would be paying off this debt for the rest of their lives.

The REPUBLICAN SHUTDOWN continues over the Affordable Care Act, a law that both houses of Congress passed and the President signed and the Supreme Court found constitutional...
Jody October 13, 2013 at 10:06 PM
Joe, the GOP didn't cause the shutdown. The present administration decided to send people home, even after the House passed a bill saying that they would be paid. The Dems are the ones playing games. The Dems are giving speech after speech about the horrible effects of the shutdown that they've done their best to ensure caused the maximum pain possible. Cheryl, I don't hate Obama because he's black- I hate him because he's destroying our country will his divisive rhetoric that you have obviously lapped up like milk from a bowl. Conservatives aren't any of the things you accuse them of. No one wants to end Soc. Sec. or Medicare or our safety net. Reform them- yes. Get the fed. govt. out of things reserved for the states- yes. Big wig Republicans and Dems have both made deals favoring the rich, largely through our tax code and federal regulations. The global economy and unions have decimated our manufacturing. The hordes of immigrants have eroded our wages and property values and sucked billions of dollars for services out of our pockets. And we're still in a recession from the financial crisis. No one wanted this shitty economy, but with our current debt and spending levels-- more debt and spending can't be the answer.
Jessica October 14, 2013 at 07:36 AM
@Je do you realize Obama is at 37% approval rating that means 2/3 think he sucks, the other 1/3 is on food stamps
Jessica October 14, 2013 at 07:39 AM
James Obama refuses to negotiate so its all his fault! You love him and Obamacare so did you sign up yet? Did your premiums go up? Oh I think they fixed the EBT system so you can spend my money on food again.
Gregory October 14, 2013 at 07:40 AM
Chances are Boehner won't respond, the 4th grader has a higher education!
Jessica October 14, 2013 at 07:49 AM
Joan is an idiot, she drank too much Obamakoolaid, The government shut down has been a good thing DESPITE Obama trying to make it hurt! He spent more money on closing parks than they had staffing them or in some cases they had no cost but he closed them. How about he NEVER golfs until the shut down is over?
RAJ (Bo) McMerritt October 14, 2013 at 10:38 AM
can you say ''set up'' by the parents......
Al Sanchez October 14, 2013 at 11:19 AM
SOUNDS LIKE THIS CHILD WAS JUST TOLD BY HER PARENTS, WHO ARE BRAINWASHED BY OBAMA, TO WRITE A LETTER -- SIMPLE AS THAT. NO NEWS HERE PEOPLE . . . . . A. SANCHEZ
Rick October 14, 2013 at 02:54 PM
Joan we all have our own thought based on the information we read. Some people just focus on what the libs say. In order to really draw a conclusion on any topic isn't true you need to look at both sides of any story, and then make your educated assessment. Joan really look up common core in your school district you might find out that its not the parents but that of the school !! I urge you to look and get back to this forum with your thoughts
Rick October 14, 2013 at 02:57 PM
James if you look closer you will find that it wasn't both parties. Do you remember what obama said to the supreme justices " that they are all appointed" he was telling them you don't do it my way you could lose your job. I urge you to look it up.
Rick October 14, 2013 at 02:58 PM
Has any one looked up agenda 21 yet ? Look at what is happening in Oregon !!
JAKE October 14, 2013 at 05:17 PM
Ain't no 9 year old wrote that...probably copied from what a pablum pukin, liberal parent wrote.
Johnny Brodersen October 15, 2013 at 02:03 AM
Looks like some people have nothing else better to do then argue over what a 9 year old said...Go America! Doing it right!
Michele Rasmussen October 15, 2013 at 03:49 AM
