City, Driver Sued For Accident Hitting Pedestrians

Two pedestrians hit in south Los Altos when a car driven by a teenager rear-ended another claimed their injuries caused missed work and emotional distress.

The Los Altos Town Crier reported Wednesday that two pedestrians hit in a evening car accident near the Cupertino border are including the city of Los Altos in the lawsuit.

The Town Crier obtained the suit, which it said described the November 2010 accident that occurred around 7 p.m.: A Volkswagen Golf traveling on Homestead Road had stopped before a crosswalk near Fallen Leaf Lane to allow pedestrians Purvi Mehta and Archana Dekate to cross. A 19-year-old driving a Toyota Land Cruiser failed to stop in time and pushed the Volkswagen into the pedestrians. , as well as comments from a person describing the injuries that were sustained.

The pedestrians' attorney said they had sustained multiple spine and leg fractures and other injuries.  from a person self-identifying as Purvi Mehta described the injuries in greater detail: a broken lumbar, crushed tibia bone with multiple fractures, hip fractures, and many torn ligaments. "I have 8 screws and 'L' shape plate on my left leg, and spine belt."

The city has on planned traffic safey improvements on the busy stretch of road from the Los Altos side of Lucky Oak and Foothill Expressway.  installation of new pedestrian crosswalks and a traffic signal, additional sidewalks, a separate bicycle/pedestrian path on the north side, median improvements and new landscaping.
