Annie's Update: Main Street Opens to Foothill Expressway on Monday, Whoo Hoo!

The asphalt is down, and at long last, customers—er motorists—can turn down Main Street from Foothill Expressway.

It's not completely done and finished, the construction work on First Street, but if you're on Foothill Expressway, you can get there from here now. "There" being Main Street that is.

The asphalt went down on Friday. That was such a momentous occasion that project information officer Beverly Tucker said she was excused from city staff training.

And even though the "Road Closed" signs are going away, there's still work to be done. Hence, "Annie's Update."

Each week, Annie's Update, more prosaically named "First Street Construction Update," lands in email boxes all over town. This service began when First Street construction ramped up two months ago. Each week Patch provides an abridged version of the update.

Here's the list of work to be done this week:

  • Install top layer "2.5 inch lift" of asphalt for First & Main intersection & first 60' of First St
  • Stripe intersection & apply temporary reflective tabs
  • Install temporary stop signs for use while traffic signals are constructed
  • Continue pouring concrete for new curbs along west side of First Street
  • Continue grading on First Street roadbed
  • Complete final demolition of paving in transition area with Foothill Expressway
  • Begin work on new gas line connection to PGE service in the Central Plaza
  • Continue work on traffic signal control box

Apricot Annie leaves us with this fun fact:

  • The asphalt is trucked fresh and hot (500°F) from the plant in San Jose for paving. The material is still between 350-400°F when it arrives onsite.
