Top 5 from the Los Altos Police Log: Elder Fraud on Oct. 19

Have you received a distress call from your "grandson" in trouble lately?

The following information was supplied by the Los Altos Police Department. Wherever arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction. A full report for the week will follow on Saturday.

Information in incidents 1-3 provided by Sgt. Cameron Shearer.

1. Attempted elder fraud: 8:52 a.m., 300 block of San Luis Avenue; an individual called a senior Los Altos resident and pretended to be her grandson. Subject stated that he was in jail after a car accident and needed money to pay for the damages. Subject wanted victim to wire money to Mexico City to pay for the “damages”. Intended victim became suspicious and called a family member who then called police; report taken.

2. Gas investigation: 7:32 p.m., 400 block of Distel Drive; carbon monoxide alarm went off, referred to fire department.

3. Warrant arrest: 11:10 a.m., Los Altos Police Station; Subject self-surrendered on a $1,000 warrant; processed and released with a court date.

4. Traffic hazard: 8 p.m., Foothill Expressway and Main Street; officer checked area, no report taken.

5. Non-injury accident: 9:19 a.m., Second Street and Lyell Street; report taken.
