Police Raise Warning About Series of Burglaries in South Los Altos

Police urge residents to watch for suspicious activity, and offer free home security inspections by community service officer.

The Los Altos Police Department is asking the public to watch for suspicious activity in the wake of a series of four burglaries of South Los Altos homes during the month of January.

Detectives are investigating the possibility that the burglaries are connected to each other.

In a statement released Thursday afternoon, police said the crimes took place in neighborhoods between Foothill Expressway and Oak Avenue, along the east and west sides of Grant Road. In most of the burglaries, entry was made through a rear or side unlocked window. The stolen items range from an array of electronic equipment to loose jewelry items.

The Los Altos Police Department asks the public to watch for and report suspicious activity in their neighborhoods. This can include any individuals who appear to be observing windows, gates and the habits of neighborhood residents, such as when they leave their homes and return. They should also watch for aggressive solicitors and vehicles not known to the neighborhood.

When calling, the public is asked to articulate specific observations, such as time of day, description of individuals, behavior, vehicles and anything else observable that would substantiate one's suspicions.

Police also recommend residents take more care in securing their homes, police said. Preventative measures include installing burglar alarms, locking perimeter gates and access points, and installing exterior motion lights. Even inexpensive video surveillance systems can be installed.

Any residents interested in receiving a free home security inspection are asked to contact Community Service Officer Paco Vergara at 650-947-2776.

Residents can report suspicious activity to the Los Altos Police Department at 650-947-2770. For emergency calls or suspected crimes in progress, residents are urged to dial 911.
