Police Calls: Wayward Deer Tours Neighborhoods

Incidents of note from the Los Altos Police log May 26-June 1.

Police in Los Altos were kept busy last week responding to a variety of calls including car accidents, wandering deer, leaf blower scofflaws, and furtive egg throwers.

At 8:38 a.m. May 26 officers responded to a malicious mischief call from a resident living on the 600 block of Rosewood Court who complained that eggs were thrown at the house during the night.  There was no damage.

An animal call about a deer reportedly spotted on the roadway at El Camino Real and Showers Drive came in at 6:28 a.m. on May 27. Responding officers checked the area but didn’t find the animal. Then, just a little more than two hours later, at 8:44 a.m., another report came in about a deer spotted in a residential area near the 60 block of Hawthorne Ave. By the time officers arrived, the deer had moved on. However, police were not yet finished tracking wayward deer for the day. A third call came in at 9:45 a.m. advising that a deer had been seen at Los Altos Square and Jordan Avenue. Officers were again unable to locate the animal.

At 1:39 p.m. May 28 police responded to a report of a tree down and causing a traffic hazard at Granger Avenue and Loyola Drive.  Officers contacted Municipal Services for removal of the tree. Later that day, at 4:36 p.m., an officer assisted parties involved in a traffic collision at Spargur Drive and El Monte Avenue.

A complaint about a loud gas-powered leaf blower in use at Wakefield Terrace and Truman Avenue came in at 9:38 a.m. May 29. Police delivered a warning to the user.

A report of a non-injury hit-and-run accident at Fremont and Truman avenues came in at 8:53 a.m. May 30. Responding officers said the victim did not want to file a police report.

The rest of the reports involved thefts and miscellaneous crimes. Among them:

  • Grand theft – 200 block of Third St.
  • Grand theft – 700 block of Orange Ave.
  • Grand theft – 1000 block of Russell Ave.
  • Identity theft – 700 block of Jordan Ave.
  • Gun ammunition destruction – 300 block of San Luis Ave.
  • Reckless driver – University Avenue and Main Street
  • Reckless driver – El Camino Real and San Antonio Road
  • Illegal dumping of garbage – 2200 block of Grant Road
  • Bicycle theft – 200 block of Cuesta Drive

Corrections: 1. Straw man attack: nobody is blaming BCS for district-wide growth. Nobody. 2. BCSRead More does not get "half the funding" of LASD. BCS gets about 6500 and LASD gets about 9500. The BCS program for typical children costs about twice as much as the comparable LASD program. BCS is simple an expensive hybrid public/private school, nothing more. 3. Mr. Roode pointed out that there are about 100 or so special ed. students at LASD (I cannot verify this but it seems very low). LASD calls out an annual expense of $7.5 million for special ed. meaning each of these students cost LASD $75,000, not $1,000 as he implied. 4. The law and the courts have ALREADY compelled LASD to give reasonably equivalent facilities and they have. BCS has a lower student/teacher ratio meaning that they have more classrooms for the same number of kids. This is not, legally speaking, LASD's problem. 5. Mr. Roode has yet to explain how the Covington campus could be 16 acres. Further, he continues to spread the fallacy that campuses ACREAGE is even remotely relevant to its student capacity. Campuses are limited by their location and traffic, not how many acres of grass there is in the back. 6. Were it not for BCS, we would have passed a bond in the last election, as the polling shows. BCS litigation has ripped our community apart and has left it with a mountain to climb when it comes to operating in a normal fashion.

@David R. I think Homestead uses EarthCare Recycling, based on its April 6 E-Waste collection dayRead More publicity (http://bit.ly/10mIV14) : www.earthcarerecycling.com "Recycle FREE your old electronic equipment - working or not! Anything with a plug or PC board inside. Also accepted are non-household batteries, VHS tapes and other media, and scrap metal. Visit www.earthcarerecycling.com for a list of accepted items. "

What kind of bins are there? Do you take used CDROMs? How about VHS tapes? Cables and wire?

I saw a public report that said most of the discussion related to carpooling and so forth, sinceRead More Blach is separated so much from the rest of the school. You know, things like dropping off both kids at Egan, and then a group of kids headed for Blach share a ride or vice versa. I don't see how any nonparents can really help with that.
