Update: Man Killed in I-280 Crash Sunday Afternoon

The pickup hit one guardrail, swerved across all four lanes of traffic and smashed into the other guardrail.

The driver killed in an accident on Interstate 280 near Los Altos Hills Sunday afternoon was a 53-year old Hispanic man. The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office has not yet released his name.

The white Ford F-150 pickup truck that he was driving is registered in San Jose.

The crash happened just after noon, with the first call reaching the California Highway Patrol dispatch center at 12:05 p.m., according to CHP Officer Amelia Jack.

Jack said the pickup was traveling southbound at 55-60 mph with the flow of traffic when it suddenly began to fishtail, hit the right guardrail, swerved across all four lanes of traffic, and hit the guardrail on the other side.

An ambulance was dispatched, but the victim was pronounced dead at 12:27 p.m.

There were earlier reports that other vehicles were involved in the crash, but Officer Jack said that while other drivers stopped to offer assistance and to give eyewitness accounts to investigators, no other vehicles were hit by the truck.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. There were no indications at the scene that alcohol or illegal drugs played a role.

Update: 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17: 
The California Highway Patrol has cleared all lanes of Interstate Highway 280 in Santa Clara County following a fatal crash this afternoon, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The crash was first reported at about 12:10 p.m. when a white pickup truck struck the center divide on southbound Highway 280 about a mile north of an off-ramp to Foothill Expressway, CHP Officer James Evans said.

As many as two other vehicles were believed to have been involved, he said.

One person was killed in the crash, Evans said.

No other injuries were reported. One lane of Highway 280 was blocked for more than two hours during a CHP investigation, Evans said.

A Sig-alert was canceled at 2:32 p.m.

One person has died this afternoon in a crash on Interstate Highway 280 in Santa Clara County near Los Altos Hills, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The crash was reported at about 12:10 p.m. when a white pickup truck struck the center divide on southbound Highway 280 about a mile north of an off-ramp to Foothill Expressway, CHP Officer James Evans said.

Preliminary information indicates that as many as two other vehicles were involved in the crash, and one person has been confirmed killed, Evans said.

An air ambulance and other emergency units were responding to the scene, Evans said. A Sig-alert was issued at 12:41 p.m.
