Los Altos Man Killed Over Weekend in Solo Collision

A 32-year-old hit a tree off the road shoulder and died early Sunday morning.

A man died Sunday after succumbing to injuries from a solo vehicle collision in unincorporated Santa Clara County on Saturday afternoon, a Redwood City California Highway Patrol officer said.

Mats J. Weltman, 32, was traveling north on Interstate Highway 280 and took the El Monte Avenue off-ramp around 5:25 p.m. when he drove his 1998 Pontiac off the
roadway, colliding with a tree on the right shoulder, CHP Officer Art Montiel
said.

Weltman, of Los Altos, endured major head trauma and was taken to Stanford Hospital, where he died Sunday at 1:15 a.m., Montiel said.

No other cars were involved in the crash. The El Monte Avenue off-ramp was closed for 30 minutes after the collision was reported at 5:25 p.m. with little impact to the light traffic, Montiel said.

Weltman was wearing a seatbelt, and there is no confirmation of whether drugs or alcohol were involved, Montiel said.
