At one point, the CHP closed three lanes.

Updated at 7 p.m.
The California Highway Patrol arrested the driver of a party van that was involved in a deadly crash on northbound Interstate Highway 280 near Portola Valley Sunday night.

Jason Quinonez, 43, was identified as the driver of a converted black Chevrolet Express 3500 traveling north on Highway 280 that went off the roadway and struck a tree south of Alpine Road around 10:50 p.m., CHP Officer Amelia Jack said.

The van overturned in the crash 20 feet away from the freeway, and a man who was a passenger was killed, she said.

Quinonez was found near the scene with minor injuries and it was initially not clear that he was the driver, according to the CHP.

He was taken to Stanford Hospital for minor lacerations and later booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of felony hit and run, DUI and manslaughter, Jack said.

The CHP has yet to confirm the company that owns the vehicle, she said.

The crash remains under investigation. Initial reports indicated that a second vehicle had been involved, but Jack said that was not the case.

Traffic was blocked on northbound Highway 280 for hours after the accident. The roadway was completely cleared shortly after 4:30 a.m. Monday.

Original Story:

All lanes of northbound Interstate Highway 280 (I-280) in unincorporated Santa Clara County, near Portola Valley, are open after a fatal crash blocked lanes for several hours this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported at about 10:50 p.m. Sunday when two cars hit and one went down an embankment on northbound Highway 280 just south of the Alpine Road off-ramp, Officer Ralph Caggiano said.

Details about the crash were not immediately available, but one person was killed, he said. The person in the second car involved in the crash was not seriously injured, Caggiano said.

A Sig-alert was issued at 11:30 p.m. when the slow lane was closed as crews worked on clearing the crash, Caggiano said. At one point, the CHP closed three lanes while crews were pulling the vehicle out of the embankment, according to the CHP.

The Sig-alert was lifted at 4:35 a.m., the CHP said.
