Chief Scott Vermeer of the Mountain View Police Department will be named the 2014 ‘Champion for Youth’ at this year’s Champions for Youth breakfast to benefit the Mountain View, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills Challenge Team.

Lauren Burns, a student at Mountain View High School, is also being honored as the ‘Youth Champion.’

The May 7 event, being held at Michael’s at Shoreline, will feature keynote speaker and internationally acclaimed Oscar and Emmy Nominated director and writer Frederick Marx.

“Chief Vermeer was selected because of his work with youth outside of his duties as police chief,” explained Gay Krause, Challenge Team Leader.  “Scott’s particular expertise includes community outreach, community policing, gang investigations and crimes against youth, which exemplifies what the Challenge Team is all about.”

Krause continued, “Chief Vermeer was a clear choice receiving the largest majority ever for a nominee from the group members themselves.”

Mountain View High School senior Lauren Burns, described as, “selfless, affable, non-assuming and thoughtful,” by Assistant Principal William Blair, was selected as this year’s ‘Youth Champion.’

“In a variety of capacities, Lauren illustrates the ideal of ‘Service before Self’, and it is with great honor that we are able to declare Lauren our Challenge Team Youth Champion,” said Blair.

Lauren is the Editor-in-Chief of the school’s yearbook, an active member of the Spartan Buddies club, one of the most active members of the Crittenden Middle School Outreach Program, serves as a teacher’s aide for the Stretch to Kindergarten Program and, in an international role, volunteers with the Amigos de las Americas program.

The Champions for Youth breakfast is open to the public and will be held on May 7 at 7 a.m. at Michael’s at Shoreline restaurant, located at 2960 N. Shoreline Blvd.

The cost to attend is $60 and proceeds will benefit the Challenge Team. Interested Community members may reserve seats via Eventbrite, or by contacting Carole Isnard at (650) 940-4669.
