Blach student hit by car near school

Motorist didn’t see boy as he was riding bike near crosswalk

A Blach Intermediate School student received minor injuries Tuesday when he was struck by a car at the intersection of Covington Road and Thatcher Drive.

Jason Dewberry, vice-principal at the school, described the 7:55 a.m. accident as minor, but said the student, whose age he didn’t know, was taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure.

According to Dewberry, a woman driving a sedan stopped at a crosswalk on Covington to allow a girl to cross. At the same time, a boy riding a bike rolled into the area. When the driver began to move, she didn’t see the bicyclist and bumped into him with her car.

Dewberry described the boy’s injuries as “bumps and bruises,” but added that he was “pretty shaken up.” The driver of the car, according to Dewberry, stopped and also was upset, but was not injured. It’s not clear if she will be cited for the incident.

Dewberry noted that the boy was wearing a bicycle helmet, which may have prevented further injury. “Helmets are important,” he said. “So many kids think they’re invincible in their opinion. It doesn’t take much (of a hit) to get a little brain damage.”

Tuesday’s accident came at an opportune time, because student safety has been at the top of the list for discussion of topics of mutual interest between the Los Altos School District and the Los Altos City Council for quite awhile. The two agencies are planning a joint meeting to discuss the matter May 29. At its May 22 meeting, the Los Altos City Council is expected to finalize its list of agenda items for that meeting.
