ASK A COP: Can I Text at a Stop Light?

You're stopped anyway, right? What could be the harm?

Question from a Patch Reader:

Is it legal to text while stopped at a stop sign or stop light?

Answer from CHP Officer Bradley Sadeck:

It is illegal to send or read a text while stopped at a stop sign or stop light. It is also illegal to use a hand held cellphone while stopped at the same.

A good driver would leave their cell phone in the glove box and never even consider using it while operating a motor vehicle. As a bicycle rider I see drivers texting and chatting all the time. Frequently they're stopped at a green light (it's changed and they didn't notice) busy texting away. Sometimes they don't even react to angry drivers honking at them. Simply put: If you text and drive you're a rude, inconsiderate, and very dangerous driver.
