All Lanes Cleared on Northbound 101 at Willow Road

Traffic resumes on U.S. Highway 101 after a pre-dawn crash creates a massive snarl in both directions, and on surface streets.

All southbound lanes have reopened on U.S. Highway 101 at 9:20 a.m. after an overturned big rig blocked both directions of traffic Sunday morning for more than six hours, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The southbound lanes were reopened about 8:20 a.m.

The tractor trailer was traveling northbound when the crash occurred north of Williow Road around 2:20 a.m. It appears the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, California Highway Patrol Officer Art Montiel said.

The driver, and his juvenile son escaped injury despite the tractor trailer crashing through the concrete center divide, Montiel said. The truck  overturned onto its right side and slid for about one hundred yards, the trailer coming to rest on top of the center divider.

Officers believe the driver may have fallen asleep as he traveled northbound, and the truck veered to the right, hitting the railing along the east side of U.S. 101. The driver then veered left and lost control of the vehicle.
