Authorities say tourists visiting tropical beaches face little risk.  Health officials in the Pacific Island nation said Wednesday there have been 2,589 confirmed cases of the mosquito borne virus since the outbreak began in November.

Investigations Continue into Dreamliner Battery Meltdown

A safety report has revealed an overheating Dreamliner battery was enough to melt rock.  According to the report, one of the eight lithium ion cells in the plane’s battery system swelled and electrolytic solution sprayed out.  It is still not known what caused the battery to overheat.  The ministry and Boeing are still investigating this issue.

Belize to Get $100 Million Cruise Port

A Belizean businessman has received legislative approval for a $100 million island cruise destination near Belize City, eliminating the need for what is currently a 45-minute tender ride to the congested Belize Tourism Village.  In the future, they will be able to dock as many as six ships.

Beijing Issues Rare Air Pollution Alert

It is recorded that Beijing has extremely poisonous air pollution.  Beijing as of now is in orange alert, which is the second highest in the four levels of urgency.  The most stringent level, red, would order half of the city’s five million cars off the road based on the last digit of their license plate.

Orlando becomes the first U.S. Airport to install Automated Border Control Technology.

Travelers from visa waiver countries will benefit from this new roll-out, which comes in the form of automated passport control kiosks.   

United Airlines is the First to Fly with New, Fuel-Efficient Split Scimitar Winglets

A Boeing 737-800 aircraft freshly retrofitted with new winglets took to the skies on February 19, 2014.  United 1273 departed from the Houston airport and flew to Los Angeles.   The new winglet design demonstrates significant aircraft drag reduction compared to the  basic blended winglet currently being used.

Hawaiian Airlines Announces Ohana by Hawaiian.

Hawaii’s newest interisland operation, Ohana by Hawaiian has announced that tickets for its long awaited turboprop service will be available as of March 11.  The airline will operate three daily flights between Honolulu International Airport on Oahu and Molokai Airport, and will operate two daily flights between Honolulu and Lanai Airport.  The daily flights will be operated by Empire Airlines.

Royal Caribbean is the First Certified Autism Friendly Cruise Line

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line will take specific measures to help its guest with autistic family members.   Staff will be trained in caring for special needs.  Special menus and accommodations will be available.

Canada’s Lancaster Bomber to Cross Atlantic for United Kingdom Tour

The Canadian Warplane Museum in Hamilton announced that it plans to fly its vintage plane to England in August.  The flight will be done in four to five hour hops, with refueling and rest stops in Goose Bay, Labrador, Narsarsuaq, Greenland and Keflavik, Iceland.  There is no oxygen on board so the entire flight will be flown at less than 10,000 feet.   There will be three pilots and a flight engineer on board using the latest in modern avionics.
