Germany - Refined Tastes and Treasures

I love going to Germany at any time of year.   My family used to go at least once a year, either skiing, or hiking in the summer and of course, we went regularly to Oktoberfest in Munich.    Skiing, with mountains in the ten to twelve thousand range which gives you long runs, and the Christmas Markets in December is a wonderful trip with the holiday atmosphere so much more enjoyed than in other parts of the world.  You can take a Christmas Markets river boat cruise, or go on a motor coach which gives you great savings.

Whether you  are driving a road hugging Mercedes along the Autobahn (freeway), enjoying a chef’s tasting menu at one of the many Michelin-starred restaurants or contemplating modern art in the minimalist interiors of a museum, Germany’s allure is undeniable.   With 38 cultural and natural sites awarded the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation you can discover Germany’s roots in every direction.

To the East - Potsdam and Berlin.  The Prussian Parks and Palaces are also worth visiting.  Berlin has 13 Michelin starred restaurants, the most of any city in Germany. Must-sees are the Brandenburg Gate, State Opera House, and the remnants of the Berlin Wall.

In the South - Bamberg.  Once you step inside the wall of old town, which was nearly unscathed by war, you can see a 4,000 year old historic site .  Fantastic, unusual shopping although it extends over seven hills like Rome, and a “Little Venice” district comprised of colorful fisherman’s house and bridges cross the Regnitz River.  With nine breweries and approximately 70 pubs serving 60 different types of beer, enjoy a couple of samples.  The Imperial Cathedral of St.Peter and St. George is a must-see.

To the North – Lubeck.  This is the first western city on the Baltic coast and it still carries an air of yesterday’s imperial glory. Lubeck is famous for its marzipan. Do go to the marzipan museum then buy a box of fanciful almond and sugar candy.  You will be impressed with this storybook island in the Trave River.

To the West – Cologne.    Every November its lively carnival draws people from around the world.  For chocolate lovers, don’t miss the nearly 10 foot high chocolate fountain at the Imhoff Chocolate Museum and the staff hands out samples.   The cathedral is a Gothic masterpiece, taking over 600 years to complete.     This is a wonderful stop on a river cruise, great restaurants and lots of interesting sightseeing.  We were there last December when it was chilly, and we took the Christmas train around the city from market to market.  The music, carols, and atmosphere made you feel happy.

You can go by train around Germany, getting a point to point ticket, not a rail pass,  go on a river boat cruise, or take a guided motor coach tour which is excellent and a great cost savings.  Your travel agent can recommend the best tour supplier.  You learn so much more about a destination when you have a local guide, speaking English,  who makes it easy to get around, saves a lot of time, and all the entrance fees are usually included in your base price of the tour.     When I asked a new client what was the highlight of his last trip to Europe, he said – the day I turned in the damned car.  A perfect customer for a luxury motor coach tour – no stress and he saved money.

My shopping is always a leather handbag and a pair of shoes.   Fantastic selection.  Auf Wiedersehen!
