Multigenerational Family Travel, An Adventure for Curious Minds

Grandparents can bond in new ways with young family members, through a well-planned trip.

This article is dedicated to helping grandparents create lasting memories for themselves and their grandchildren.

We know that when grandparents and grandchildren travel together, they are drawn closer and relate to each other in remarkable new ways. Surrogate grandparents such as aunts, uncles, and friends can likely find the same benefits to their relationships.

Honoring a graduation, a special birthday or a school award, a bar mitzvah or a retirement, are all reasons for planning a trip. It’s another expression of love, to spend precious time together.

Think of travel as one of the greatest gifts you can give your children and grandchildren. The opportunity to see other cultures as you bond as a family is something you should not pass up.

Families are often looking for a vacation which is enriching, memorable, and fun. So, itineraries should stimulate curiosity, encourage exploration, and discovery. Do you want to trace your family’s history?  Visit the country where your ancestors came from.

There should be opportunities to relate to each other on an intergenerational level and to connect with the family’s past. And there should be peer activities where  grandchildren will enjoy activities only with other grandchildren.

A cruise is a marvelous choice. Everyone can do his or her own thing, and meet up for meals.

Structure it so that there is a center to the group. The grandparents should have a suite to use as the meeting place. If there are tiny ones in the group, then there should be someone to take care of their activities.

Some places to consider:

A great place is Alaska, on a small ship, with marine biologist and naturalists on board.

Australia is a fantastic place for them to see nature, animals, aboriginal culture, and the Great Barrier Reef. I arrange for families to have a behind-the-scenes tour of the Taronga Zoo and feed the animals. You can learn to paint your own boomerang and visit a remote cattle station, for example.

Several of the tour companies provide two guides to each family, and places like Europe, Asia, all offer something unique.

Africa is a big seller, a once-in-a-lifetime experience, for which we've received rave reviews.

Magical Great Britain, with time to visit lots of historic places, is popular.

Picture you and your family making pizza together in Rome under the watchful eye of a skilled chef, or practicing the tango in the ballroom of a historic mansion in Buenos Aires.

Rent a villa with a chauffeur and chef, charter a boat, or a carriage on a train, so many possibilities.

But you don't have to go abroad, necessarily. We've arranged adventures in America. One of the most popular is Arizona and Utah, rafting down the Colorado River, seeing Monument Valley with a Navajo guide, spending three nights at a working ranch, or going to Wyoming, and experiencing a dude ranch. Even for people with disabilities.

The Galapagos Islands – the footprints of life adventure is a great holiday.  Cruise thru the archipelago and visit the breeding site for penguins, albatross, seals and many more.

It's more than a vacation.

It's about you, it’s about your children, it's about time.
