Fiji: Set your speed to Slow

Fiji lends itself to honeymooners, divers, families and adventurers. Best time to visit is May to October for lower rainfall and less humidity.

Fiji was known as the Cannibal Isles, all 322 islands are the crossroads of the Pacific.

In fact, Fiji has more land and people than all of Polynesia combined. In 1884 the British brought in East Indian labor to work in the sugar cane plantations, so today half the population is Indo-Fijian. It obtained independence in l972.

The best time to visit is May to October when it is less humid. The reef waters are also clearest for the scuba diver. There are hundreds of resorts, all with great snorkeling and diving.

I have been more times than I can count, staying on different islands at various times. This is a great destination for honeymoons, and a wonderful family location on specific islands. The climate is tropical.

You would fly into Nadi, on the main island of Viti Levu, but I don’t recommend staying there because the beaches are not good. You are better off going to one of the islands.

I would recommend a week at a resort, then perhaps take a 4-or 7-day cruise through the Yasawa islands out of Lautoka. This is a great way to get different snorkeling or diving experiences, and see other islands.

The Fijian people are very courteous, friendly, with an amazing variety of traditional customs and crafts,  strong culture, lots of music and dancing and good value for your money.

My favorite resort is the Likuliku Lagoon which is a couples-only property in the Mamanucas archipelago, 16 miles from Nadi. You get there by catamaran, seaplane, or helicopter. It won the award for the Best Overseas Resort by the Luxury Travel Magazine. It has the only over-the-water bungalows in Fiji—just ten of them—and l8 beach bures (bungalows), which are subtle luxury. This is a new property, and the General Manager was previously at an island in Queensland which I sell on many of my Australian bookings. Good management is an essential part of recommending a property. It also has great architecture, luxury accommodation, and a fine restaurant.

It has just been added to the Signature Travel Network list of top hotels and resorts in the world, of which we are a part. This means that our guests get special amenities and upgrades. We only have two Fijian properties in our directory.

I was only there 24 hours in my last trip and immediately Polynesian Paralysis sets in. There is only one speed: Dead slow.
