Trading for a Closer Community

Nothing Aut-O-Mat-ic about Art Docents. Los Altos Art Docents forge a stronger sense of community by exchanging their pre-loved goods.

The multi at Covington school was abuzz with excitement. The Los Altos Art Docents 'oohed' and 'aahed' over the goods and services offered for trade at the October General Meeting yesterday. A long table was strewn with a potpourri of items from beautifully hand-crafted purses to a doggy jacket and other odds and ends. A sign announced 'Aut-O-Mat' over the heads of the crowd.

Inspired by the Bay Area installation artist, Kathryn Kenworth, the docents excitedly negotiated deals: paving bricks for homemade icecream, babysitting for an ESL 'tune up'. Kathryn Kenworth attended the Fall Seminar in September and gave a fascinating slide show of her art work with cardboard and ideas of community. The Trading Chequebooks which the docents created, were used yesterday to facilitate the exchanges. Many people walked away very happy with their acquisitions and with a stronger sense of community.
