Los Altos Hills Family Kicks Off Campaign To Publish Book Of Games

Ideas for no screen time: The Breier family has hundreds of games to share – but needs $5,000.

By Katherine Hafner

Inspired by a lifelong love of games and a desire to combat the modern culture of screens, a local Los Altos Hills family recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund a how-to book of games.

The five members of the Breier family, who have resided in Los Altos Hills for about 15 years, decided to pen a book detailing how to play hundreds of games, after realizing many close friends of theirs didn’t know about many of the games they thought were “obvious,” said Corey Breier, who is 21 years old and the family’s project leader.

The family’s Kickstarter campaign went live on Thursday, with a goal fundraising effort of $5,000. The money would be used to self-publish the book – titled “Life is a Game: Group Games for Kids, Teens and Adults” – and pay for illustrators, Breier said.

As of 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, the page had 12 backers and had raised $565.

Breier said they must reach their goal in order to actually receive the money they raise. If they do not meet their goal, they may turn to alternative publishing options, he added.

The idea behind the book, which will primarily include sharing the family’s vast knowledge of interactive face-to-face games, is to “fight the screens,” and make people look up from their smartphones to interact with each other, Breier said.

“People want to enjoy their friends and want to spend time with them, but they get caught up in small talk and don’t know what to do,” he said. “Games fill that up very well … and they engage your brain.”

The campaign has 25 more days until donations close – until Wednesday, August 7.
