LASD HAPS ABOUT CAMPUS

Each week, Los Altos Hills resident Laura Orella will post "LASD Haps About Campus," letting readers know what's going on in our area schools. This week: Santa Rita's Witches' Delight.

Some call it Witches' Delight, but I like to call it Witches' Delightful because the event is always one of the hauntingly happiest celebrations for the whole community during the fall season!!

The carnival event, open to everyone, will be held from 3-8 p.m. Friday (Oct. 26) at Santa Rita Elementary School, 700 Los Altos Ave, Los Altos.

Each October, for the past 52 years, Santa Rita transforms its campus into a big Halloween sensation complete with carnival games, costume parade, barbecue, cookie decorate, and cool rides. The best part—everyone, young and old alike, comes in costumes to be part of the fun-filled fund-raiser.

According to co-organizer Kelly Flaig, for many years the event was held on the last Saturday afternoon in October.  The school volunteers sold a few baked goods, offered a couple of games to play, and kids could participate in a costume parade.

"Over the years, it began to grow!," Flaig said."They added more games, had a costume contest, and added the famous Cakewalk!!

In 2008, Santa Rita began celebrating Witches' Delight on the last Friday evening of October.  BBQ dinner was a new treat, and the ever-popular carnival rides came for the first time!!  Then in 2009, a Spooky Silent Auction was held in the Multi.

"Families bid on, and win many fantastic items every year!" the organizer continued. "It was about this time when Witches' Delight grew to what it is now. This event has grown to be one our school's largest fundraisers.  Our families look forward to this special night all year long!

This year's event includes five carnival rides, including the Frog Hopper, Wild Raft, Dizzy Dragons, Obstacle Course, and, new this year for the older kids, the Sizzler!

The event also boasts nine different carnival games in which kids of all ages can win prizes, the famous Cake Walk and cookie decorating booth, face painting and a costume contest. Tickets for carnival snacks, BBQ and activities are $1. Admission is free. Proceeds benefit the Santa Rita PTA. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
