Let's Get More Kids Biking or Walking to School!

Walking or Wheeling, it's GOOD for kids, GOOD for Los Altos, and
GOOD for our future.

Help us make it happen.

Thanks to many volunteers, along with the efforts of the GreenTown Los Altos team, more local kids are riding bicycles or walking to school. Besides providing great exercise and decreasing vehicle emissions, bicycling increases a sense of community. You can get more students out of cars and into healthier habits this upcoming school year by donating or volunteering your time to GreenTown Los Altos!

This year, our WoW! (Walk or Wheel) program emphasizes bike and pedestrian safety by:

  • Organizing student bike trains. Bike trains are a proven method for getting more kids to ride to school. Riding with others is safer and more fun, and it provides gentle peer pressure to keep kids participating.
  • Offering more bicycle education. We want more kids learning from our bike rodeos, school assemblies, and bike safety classes this year. We encourage parents’ participation and support for students transporting themselves to school.

Our goal is to increase by 10% the number of students who bike or walk to school this year.

WoW! is just one of GreenTown’s school-linked programs. We are also working with local schools to:

  • Achieve zero waste through recycling paper, using compostable lunch trays, etc.
  • Use renewable energy, such as taking advantage of the Peninsula’s abundant sunshine by installing solar panels.
  • Harvest rainwater for use where expensive drinking water is not necessary.

Your donation to GreenTown Los Altos helps us create bike-train maps, educational videos, brochures, and other materials to get kids out of cars and into the fresh air. Please make a donation online right now. Thank you!
