Singing Their Praises: Peninsula Choral Group Named 'Best in the Bay'

Masterworks Chorale will perform their holiday concert Sunday in San Mateo.

Written by Joan S. Dentler

There are over 500 choirs in the Bay Area (who knew?), and Masterworks Chorale, was recently selected as one of the "Best Choirs on the Peninsula" by CBS SF Local. The chorale group, now in its 50th year, is comprised primarily of men and women from the mid-Peninsula.

Each season, the Masterworks Chorale performs three or four pairs of concerts featuring instrumental ensembles comprised of the Bay Area's leading professional musicians. Dr. Bryan Baker has been Artistic Director of the Chorale since the Fall of 2002.

The review, posted on CBSLocal.com, sings the praises of Masterworks Chorale: "With an ambitious concert schedule at churches and high school and college auditoriums in and around San Mateo, Masterworks Chorale celebrates its 50th year of bringing superior choral music to local audiences. Many concerts are in conjunction with San Francisco and Bay Area symphonies and orchestras, frequently with international soloists. Everyone is encouraged to audition, and while the music is challenging, choral directors work with singers to improve their skills. The repertoire ranges from Baroque to contemporary for this highly acclaimed choral ensemble with seven European tours under its belt, led by Dr. Bryan Baker."

The group's "Home for the Holidays" concert will be performed this Sunday, Dec. 8 at Transfiguration Episcopal Church, 3900 Alameda de las Pulgas in San Mateo San Mateo. There will be two performances, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., with a holiday cookie buffet in between.
