The MVLA Union High School District recognized two volunteers as "Friends of Education" for their longstanding dedication to tutoring students.

Virginie Metivier, a tutorial center volunteer at Mountain View High School, and Cathy Walz, a volunteer at Los Altos High Schooltutorial center, were both honored at the Oct. 28  MVLA board meeting.

Metivier, the mother of two MVHS grads -- Olivia ('11), a biochemistry major at McGill University, Montreal, and Ben ('13), a freshman in electrical engineering at CalPoly -- has served for the past six years as a volunteer tutor in the MVHS Tutorial Center, and in the AVID classroom tutoring French, math, physics and chemistry.

She also prepared three French natives for the French AP test, and home- and hospital-taught French and math to two students who were unable to attend school due to illnesses.

Also honored was Walz, who has done it all from tutoring to mentoring, serving on boards and even serving hot lunch to students.

Walz has been a MVLA UHSD volunteer for more than a decade and is a board member and mentor for the MVLA Community Scholars.

She tutored at Alta Vista High School for two years and has been tutoring at the LAHS Tutorial Center for almost 10. Her specialties are chemistry, biology, history and English, and she’s also a very popular writing coach for Essay Day series.

Students sign up specifically for her help, according to school staff, and are even willing to be put on waiting lists to receive her help.
