LEARN HOW TO CREATE A GARDEN

On
Wednesday November 20, at 7:30 PM, at Room 12 of the Hillview Community Center,
97 Hillview Avenue, Los Altos, the De Anza Chapter of the American Rhododendron
Society will feature a presentation by Bob and Judy Mathey on their Harmony
Woods garden, located in Mendocino, California.

The
Harmony Woods garden, nestled into a cathedral of redwoods, reflect a penchant
for collecting an enormous range of unusual and beautiful plants. The emphasis
is on rhododendrons and conifers, with over 300 specimens of each, but they are
a small part of a vast array of plant material gracing over twenty beds. The
program will show how two waterfalls and a stone bridge and other parts of the
garden were created in 2006 and 2007 and the planting with rhododendrons,
maples, ferns, and other types of plants. The presentation will emphasize the
exuberance of rhododendrons seen in ways other than flowers, the influence of
parentage in hybrids, the uses of rhododendrons in garden design, and a few
slides on the construction of the waterfall. In this program, you can learn how
a garden is established, which can help you in building your garden.
